How We Got Started

Emeryville is a great place to work and attend school. Tucked away on 61st and Doyle was a small school that housed a CalSAFE program. This program operates a school and daycare for pregnant teens and teen mothers. All of the girls in this program are living below the poverty line.
I am a Human Resources Professional and was working in Emeryville in 2005 when we discovered this little school. We invited them to a Halloween Parade and could not believe that right in our backyard was a school that was so needy yet had no benefactors and no PTA. They did not even have pencils or crayons! They receive very little funding from government agencies and are desperate for help.

We have extended a hand to them, but they need more resources. That is where you come in. This program is operated out of my house/garage with 100% volunteer time.
The school moved during the summer of 2008 to the Fruitvale District of Oakland. This is clearly the poorest area of Oakland and these young parents are struggling everyday to stay in school.
